David Rittenhouse (1732-1796): Astronomer, Inventor, Mathematician, Scientific Instrument Craftsman, Surveyor and First Director of the U.S. Mint
David Rittenhouse’s survey established the Delaware - Pennsylvania border with a 12-mile circle around the New Castle, Delaware Court House. He also helped establish the boundaries between New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. He was the first director of the U.S. Mint producing the nation’s first coins. The program will include examples of his inventions, visuals of his home on the Wissahickon Creek in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and other colonial notables.
